I’m 58. These Are the 5 Things I Do Every Day to Protect My Peace
Nothing extreme. No complicated rituals. Just five simple habits I’ve learned to stick with as I’ve gotten older.
People ask me how I stay so calm more now than they did when I was 40. The funny thing is, I actually do less than I used to.
After years of trying meditation apps, sage, crystals and every bracelet that promised calm, I’ve simplified everything down to five habits.
The first four are pretty boring. #5 is the one people always ask me about.
1. I move every day

I don't spend hours at the gym. I walk, I garden, and I get out of the house, especially after a day full of other people's moods.
My rule is simple: do something every day.
2. I keep my mornings quiet

Coffee, the window, ten minutes before anyone needs anything from me. Nothing complicated, and I still answer my messages, just not before eight.
I care more about how my day starts than how much I get done.
3. I protect my sleep

I used to go to bed replaying what someone had said to me that day. Now I keep my phone out of the bedroom and go to bed at the same time every night.
It's probably the most boring thing on this list. It's also one I rarely break.
4. I stopped chasing every new crystal

I used to have a drawer full of crystals, sage bundles and bracelets. Every few months, I'd discover something new and completely change my routine.
Eventually, I realized more crystals didn't necessarily mean more peace.
So I simplified everything.
And that's how I discovered #5.
5. Every morning, I put on one birthstone necklace
This is the one people always want to know about.
For years, I thought the more crystals I owned, the more protected I’d be. And still, one comment at work could follow me home and sit with me all evening.
Then I started looking at protection differently.
Instead of asking “How powerful is it?”, I started asking two questions:
What made this necklace interesting to me
It wasn’t one “miracle stone.” It was how a few things I already believed in were brought together in one small necklace.
The stone of the month you were born, cut into a little heart at the centre. It’s what makes the necklace yours, and the knot works best with your own month.
Three arcs woven into one unbroken line, with no opening for other people’s negativity to get through.
Almost black indoors, nearly turquoise in daylight. It’s the part people lean in to look at.
But then there’s something I had almost never considered before:
Having the right stone is only half the story.
My crystals stayed in a drawer at home. This one is on me at work, in the car and at the dinner table, the places where other people’s negativity actually reaches me.
That gave me a much simpler way to think about protection:
That’s eventually what led me to the Avera Witch Knot Birthstone Necklace.
All together in one small necklace.
And that’s why this necklace replaced so many of the crystals that used to clutter my drawer.
I don’t expect any necklace to magically change the people around me.
I just want other people’s negativity to stop reaching me, without having to pull away from anyone.
And that’s exactly why it has become the fifth habit I stick with every morning.

The knot, and what it stands for
The triquetra — three arcs woven without beginning or end — is read in Celtic tradition as faith, love and unity. In folk practice the same knot is worn as a witch knot: a charm you keep at the throat to hold your own energy in and other people’s out. The heart at the centre is your birth month’s stone. Tradition has it that the two together keep you grounded while whatever isn’t meant for you finds its way back out.

6 Weeks Of Wearing It
My Peace, Week by Week
Not an overnight change. Just one necklace, worn every day, with the changes noticed over time.

Start by noticing how often your hand goes to it when someone's tone changes.

Keep putting it on every morning, even on the days you'd rather stay in bed.

Start noticing which comments still follow you home, and which ones stay at work.

Compare with where you started, when one bad mood could cost you your evening.

Keep it simple. No new crystal, no new ritual, just the same knot every morning.

Step back and notice how much calmer things feel at home.
